It is that time a year again the 38^th Annual Fungus Fair is January 13-15, 2012 in Santa Cruz California at the Louden Nelson Community Center. All you mushroom lovers like me, this is the place to be. There are hundreds of mushrooms on display you also get to learn about different mushrooms in their recreated habitat. There is a special room for the kids with hands on activities where they can also learn about the mushrooms. If you enjoy cooking with mushrooms like I do there culinary stations set up teaching you how to prepare the mushrooms to get the best flavor out of them. Mushrooms in the wild can also be very dangerous if you don’t know what to look for. There will be renowned speakers on all three days informing people on edible and poisonous mushrooms. Mushrooms are very healthy for you there rich in iron, copper, calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and folic acid. My favorite mushrooms are Shitake, Beef Steak and Button mushrooms. If you love mushrooms like me the 38^th Annual Fungus Fair in Santa Cruz California is definitely the place to be, so pack up the kids and make this a family day trip.

The Joys Of Being A Courier

I deliver things to people for a living, and I really enjoy it! No, I don't dress-up like Santa Claus every Christmas with a fetish for passing out presents, although I have gained a few pounds lately.

I'm a courier, working for a company called 'Streetwise Special Delivery Incorporated' located in Gilroy, California, where we service the greater San Francisco Bay Area and all parts of California, our reach extending nationally, and, internationally when needed.

Once in a while I get to step onto a jet to deliver documents or items to a far away customer, only to catch the next flight home mission accomplished, however, most travel time is spent in the car driving near and far, to deliver customers just what they need....when they need it!

The enjoyment comes from visiting so many places, and delivering different items to interesting people for various reasons that involve me in situations not encountered in other professions.

Whether it means getting an computer part to business sight before the engineer arrives making his job easier, or delivering a batch of gourmet cookies to a shopping mall delicatessen just before the lunch rush, or taking sensitive medical equipment or supplies to a hospital in time for doctors and nurses to save lives, or driving medication to the homes of needy patents in the middle of the night (I'm a licenced medical courier), even taking special hospice-meds to terminal cancer sufferers in pain, I satisfy people's needs....and it makes me feel like I'm contributing!

This makes each ride worth it for me, that and the satisfaction I often see on our clients faces....the same satisfaction my company demands, and guarantees on each and every job!

I feel this is the big reason we're still in business, and able to weather the storm of a bear-market economy which has swallowed up many of our competitors (often much larger than us).

Our philosophy is simple: you only get ONE shot with a client, so provide them with optimum customer service, thus creating the satisfaction that sets us apart from others....and sends us new business from referrals!

We also maintain company growth (each employee and the owners!) by way of our name..."Streetwise", as EACH of us hit the streets, strip-malls and business parks with eyes and ears open....trying to find new companies that need our service.

Add to that our informative website (www.streetwisesd.com), its educational blogs, anecdotes, and even a modern, sophisticated radio station....and we're armed with the marketing tools to progress and prosper well into the future.

The FATE Of Bay Area Sports Teams Entering 2012!

With three and a half months left in the sports year, here's a quick forecast, fair-weather and foul, involving our local professional sports teams!

It starts off badly for baseball with no sun setting on the Oakland Athletics, and very little shining on the San Francisco Giants. As for Oakland, they were eliminated from any playoff hopes with yesterday's 4-1 loss to the California Angels, however, despite numerous injuries, specifically to veteran Coco Chrisp and to the entire pitching staff....they've stayed competitive with guts, effort, and stubborn pride.

Next season looks much brighter, following break-out efforts from young stars Josh Willingham (26-HR's--90-RBI's) and rookie sensation Jemile Weeks at second base. Fine pitching performances from Gio Gonzalez, Andrew Bailey, Guillermo Moscoso, Andrew Bailey, and Brandon McCarthy point toward more success in 2012....and a much easier transition for Manager Bob Melvin, who emerged in mid-season following the firing of Bob Gerin.

As for San Francisco, the Giants are still hanging on by a thread after a disastrous 14-26 slump that has them all but eliminated from catching the West division leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Thank God there's a wildcard hope still dangling, however, to pick up six games on the Atlanta Braves with time running thin, it would take a miracle!

However, after today's 3-1 win over San Diego, their 4th-strait victory (Carlos Beltran hit 2-homers for winning pitcher Tim Lincicum) it's tough to count out the reigning World Champs....especially considering what happened last season!

Should they fail however, blame the infamous injury bug which stung them harder than any other National League Team in 2011, losing the likes of catcher Buster Posey, and second baseman Freddy Sanchez for the whole year, while ailing others for part of it, including relievers Brian Wilson and Jeremy Affelt, and sluggers Pablo Sandoval and Andres Torres to name just a few!

Better times next year depend on Wilson and the rest of their potent pitching staff returning healthy, along with strong, second seasons from up-and-comers like Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and newly squired infielder Jeff Keppenger.

Combine that with a few good roster moves and cuts, along with some bucks better spent on another offensive slugger...and I think manager Bruce Boche will have this team contending for another championship in 2012!

To basketball and the "new look" Golden State Warriors...literally! Start at the top with new Owner-CEO Joe Lacob, Co-Chairman Owner Peter Guber, and Hall-of-Fame superstar legend Jerry West joining the executive board as Chief Consultant.

These three refreshing breaths of fresh air finally banishing old Owner Chris ("could care less") Cohan, AND...the addition of new head coach Mark Jackson, have me and others finally believing that things are looking up for a Warrior team which has missed the playoffs every year but ONE, since 1994!

Add to that the maturation of the two young, spectacular guards Monta Ellis and Steph Curry, and an even better year for center-forward David Lee, and you've got at least the beginning ingredients for a team ready to make a playoff run.

Much may also depend on how center Andris Biedrins is either replaced, or somehow slips OUT of last years "comatose" state of play...and returns to his former winning form.

Realistically though, sparkling efforts from veterans like forward Dorell Wright and, perhaps first round draft choice Klay Thompson may better improve the Warriors chances.

I'm looking for a 40-win season at best, which will NOT get them into the playoffs....however, rest assured they will play in front of home-sellout crowds filled with the best NBA fans in the league, all from right here in the Oakland, San Francisco Bay Area. Go Warriors!

Our National Hockey League team the San Jose Sharks remain the most consistant winners of all Bay Area pro sports teams, and yet, despite getting a little closer in 2010, they're still two steps from heaven....where the Stanley Cup Trophy resides!

In order to reach the finals (step one), and win it all (step two), the Joe Thornton-Patrick Marleau-Dan Boyle era....can NOT have run its course--yet, because all three are back this season!

I'm keeping the faith, and remain a stubborn believer that this trio can hold the fort together, and, at least get them back to the Western Conference finals.

From there it will take a mixture of last years recipes and some key, new ingredients to cook up a meal worthy of the coveted CUP!

The October 8th home season opener against Phoenix will not see 2010 stars Devin Setoguchi or Dany Heatley, both traded away in the off season.

However, look for an influx of young stars, like last year's rookie sensation Logan Couture, hopefuls Mike Connelly and Freddy Hamilton.

Then, tutor them with newly acquired veterans Michael Handzus and Martin Havlat together with staple reliables Ryane Clowe, Doug Murray, Joe Pavelsky, Torrey Mitchell, Jason Demers, and Antti Niemi....blended relentlessly with Jumbo-Joe, Patty, Danny-Boy and executive chefs Doug Wilson (GM)and 3rd-year Head Coach Todd McClellan--and I predict THREE'S A CHARM, and a gormet delight! The final SHARK FEAST!

Finally to Pro Football:

Al Davis's biggest mistake may have been letting Jim Harbaugh get away after serving as an assistant coach in Oakland. Now, after leading Stanford to college football prominence a few short years later, Jim threatens to do the same as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers...and I bet he does, eventually!

shakey secondary....and I prognostigate a 7-9 record.(Possibly 8-8)

This could get them to the playoffs because they contend in a very weak NFC West Division. It will be close!

To tip the scales, look for big years from runningback veteran Frank Gore and receivers Michael Crabtree newly acquired Braylon Edwards, and tight end Vernon Davis, along with a much better pass rush from the likes of Ray McDonald and Justin Smith.

When it's all said and done, the 49ers MAY finally make the playoffs by combining existing talent with Coach Harbaugh's ability to inspire quarterback Alex Smith toward patient, safe, ball-control success under center--just as Harbaugh did quarterbacking the Colts in 1995.

It may come down to the final regular season game. We'll see.

As for the Oakland Raiders, I think they are FINALLY ready to take that next step too, with an even stronger chance than San Francisco. Their new headcoach Hue Jackson has spent more time with his team having led the offense last season as an assistant coach, thus becoming extremely popular with his players.

After watching the Raider front seven defense destroy the Bronco running attack in Denver on Monday night, this may keep them in more games than last year with stars like team leader Richard Seymour, Cameron Wemblely, and Stanford Routt.... despite the fact their schedule is a grueling one again!

I say, if the Raiders can win at least two of their first four games (already won the first), and, at the same time gain a strangle-hold on NOT drawing tons of penalties...they can at last WIN the AFC West Division for the first time since 2002!

However, they must have a better than average year from somewhat average quarterback Jason Campbell. For him to succeed, they must run, run, and run even harder and farther that last year....and they ran FAR in 2010 with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.

Young, speedy wide receivers like Jacoby Ford, Darius Helyward-Bey, Chaz Schillens, and now ailing Luis Murphy must also step up and reach their potential...as must a newly developed, although talented offensive line to protect Campbell, thus allowing him to find those open receivers!.

The 2011 Oakland Raiders have a playoff-bound defense, and an almost-playoff-bound offense. If they minimize mistakes, and play as hard for Coach Douglas and his staff as I think they will--then watch the Raiders go 9-7 and sneak into the post season!

The "SILVER AND BLACK"...are back!

p.s. There is one OTHER mini-pro team...the San Jose Sabercats of Arena Football who follow up last years painful 7-11 season with new hope behind returning quarterback Mark Grieb...who has led this team to three championships in the past decade. (more than can be said for the other guys) Go Cats!

If you want to try out for the team and really get into the sports scene, the Sabercats are holding a try out session Saturday October 1st. Ouch!

Sacramento State Fair July 14-31, 2011

It’s time for the State of California fair; this is the biggest fair in the state. Sacramento will be alive from July 14 - 31, 2011. When I was in high school I would go to Sacramento State fair with my best friend and her family. We would leave on Thursday get there and spend the whole weekend in Sacramento enjoying all that the fair had to offer. I really enjoyed the concerts and the rides. I have seen Tower of Power, Con Funk Shun and Ohio Players in concert. The county fair has something for everyone. There
is Poppy Pal Club for kids under 12. Tuesdays are kid’s day, free admission and all rides are $1 you can’t beat that. Poppy the fairs mascot is having a birthday party on July 19, 2011 all kids are invited. There is a kid’s talent show on July 26, 2011. For people who go to the fair for the exhibitions and attractions there is the Big Bug exhibit. This exhibit
has gigantic robotic insects. All you music lovers the new Rock U exhibit, you can learn about the history of Rock “N” Roll. For the fairgoers who love to come see the live animals there is Kangaroo Joey’s Big Adventure.You can see six month old Australia baby kangaroo Joey, Wisk the Hedgehog, Emily the Emu and Spike the Porcupine. The concerts at the Sacramento State fair are pretty good this year. You have War, Ohio Players and SOS

The 22nd San Jose Junior League Rummage Sale

It is time once again for the 22nd annual San Jose Junior League Rummage Sale. I started going to this sale back in the late 1980s. With my mother and sisters, would make a whole day out of it. Would have our breakfast and lunch out there while standing in line, strategizing what department we would head to first. You have to know where you’re going, because the place is 45,000 square feet and it can be overwhelming. There are signs posted for every department, like furniture, linens, clothing, electronics, sporting goods, footwear, appliances and baby supplies to name a few. I will tell you this furniture and appliance goes first. If you like shopping for high quality merchandise at bargain prices, this is the place to be. I suggest you get there early, because the line is long.
Junior League Rummage Sale is held this weekend March 12th and 13th at the San Jose County Fair Ground from 9am to 4pm. There also is a Community Health Fair out there on March 12th 8am to noon. This is great for families with children, because they get free vision, dental and other health screenings. All you bargain hunters and families with children get out to the San Jose Junior League Rummage Sale.

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS

When I was ten years old, my brothers, sisters and I would watch, The
Go-Go Globetrotters on Saturday morning cartoons. I was into basketball,
would play horse with my brother we would make up trick shots and dribble
trying to mimic the Harlem Globetrotters.

No one knows the real beginning of the Harlem Globetrotters, but it’s said to have started in the 1920‘s on the South side of Chicago, Illinois where all the original players grew up. The Harlem Globetrotters are known for
the comic routines, but they are skilled basketball players. Some players that have played on the Globetrotters are NBA greats Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain, Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins and Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton,

I have never seen the Harlem Globetrotters in person, but I would like to see them one day. Parents if you don’t have anything to do this weekend, take your kids to see the Harlem Globetrotters. You will enjoy yourself and

People are rushing around trying to get their last minute shopping done. Some people are so rude and in such a hurry, they drive like maniacs cutting people off and causing terrible accidents. This past Saturday December 18, 2010 my sister and I were driving down San Tomas Expressway Santa Clara Ca. heading toward El Camino. There is a accident in the two left lanes emergency vehicles are there. I say to my sister in-law “people need to slow down, their speeding like idiots going nowhere fast in traffic”. Well we continue down San Tomas to El Camino, we are in the left lane at the stop light the second car waiting for the light to change. We see this lady in a Jeep Cherokee at the intersection run into Silver Mazda twice. Hitting it in the back and causing it to spin and hitting it in the front causing it to spin into a parking lot across the street hitting a van. Instead of the lady putting on here brakes she accelerated, through the intersection coming across the medium, hitting the car in front of us moving it like a bowling pin into the other lane causing that car to it another car. We thought that was it but the Cherokee keep coming and smashed into my sisters 1988 300TE Mercedes station wagon and totaling it. If it were not for Isabella that’s what she called her car she would not be here and I would not be here telling this story this. Cars now days are not as sturdy as cars 20 years ago. Thank God we were in Isabella.

When I was a child five days before Christmas my parents would gather up my brothers, sisters and I. Put us in the family station wagon, we would drive around San Jose looking at the houses with Christmas displays on the front lawns. This was our family tradition, I took my son, nieces and nephew on theses drive when they were little. I hope they keep the tradition going with their kids.

Crab Season Is Here!

I like crab but I don't like picking it out of the shell. If you want to really get your crab eat on There is the I.F.E.S. annual Crab Cioppino Feast. October is here! I’m especially fond of October, the leaves are changing colors we have Indian summer, it’s my birthday month and there are pumpkin patches all over the Bay Area. My parents would take my siblings and I to the pumpkin patch so each one us could pick out our own pumpkin. When we got home we would crave our pumpkins and roast the seeds. This memory is something that has stayed with me. I passed it on to my son and I hope he passes it on to his kids.

Every year for the past three years I have looked forward to the Fall Music Festival in Sonoma California at the B R Cohn Winery. This festival is for two days October 9 & 10, 2010. There are vendors of all kinds selling hand crafted jewelry, pictures, clothing and crafts. Just about any kind of food you could think of, to satisfy any kind of taste bud.

The atmosphere is wonderful people walking around with there wine eating a kicking back on the grass. The musical groups are fantastic. The Doobie Brothers always head line either Saturday or Sunday. This year they will head line on Saturday October 9, 2010. Also on the same show will be Cheap Trick, Grand funk Railroad, War, The Turtles, Lara Johnston the daughter of Tom Johnston lead singer of The Doobie Brothers and Pat Simmons Jr.

I will be at this festival on Saturday, getting my grub on, kicking back with good friends listening to some fantastic bands. So all you wine lovers out there if you want to taste some good wines and see some great bands, come out to the B R Cohn Winery in Sonoma California on October 9th an 10th, 2010.

Redwood City's “Core Purpose” is to Build a Great Community Together.

Redwood City seem like it is a family orientated community. They have music in the park and other events for the neighborhoods. On Wednesday from 6-8pm June 23 thru August 11, 2010. Redwood City host Zanzibar an Afro/Latin Funk band August 4, 2010. On the final day of music in the park August 11, 2010 Redwood City will host California Beach Boys band a Tribute to the Beach Boys. Redwood City will host Target Family Day on August 8, 2010 this event will go July through September. There will be activities for the kids and activities for the adults.

When I was younger I used to go to other cities to check out the atmosphere and to get away from the same old routine. If you fill like getting out of your same old box then go check out Music In The Park or Target Family Day in Redwood City.

Springsteen tribute band will play Saturday. On Sunday "Zoo Station", a U2 tribute band. For those of you who love to eat there are five food court hrough out the Fremont Festival of the Arts. "The annual "Berkeley Kite Festival"...a high-flying event!

When I was a grade school kid growing up in Campbell, California I got hooked on flying kites. For me, it was almost as exciting as Christmas morning!

Every February the wind would pick up around my birthday, and upon receiving the new kite I always asked for, my friend Kent and I would spend hours after school, flying our kites as high, as far, and as long as possible.

Eventually, the wind would take one kite, and a telephone wire or a tall tree would take another....so we'd just hike down to the five and dime store and buy more with our allowance money. This ritual lasted us about a month, until little-league season started up!

Looking decades back, I still cherish those fond memories, and this weekend I'm going to re-live some of them at the annual 'Berkeley Kite Festival'. If you happen to be looking for a great way to spend a few hours, I highly recommend this fantastic two-day event!

It happens this Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st at Cesar E. Chavez Park at the Berkeley Marina, where thousands upon thousands of kites (of all kinds) will fill the summer sky.

However, there's much more to experience at this festival. You'll witness multi-line competitions of the Bay Area Sport Kite League, and also battling kite contests called 'candy drop' and 'rokkaku'.

Traditional kites will also be displayed by special guests the 'Sode-Cho Kite-Flying Society' from Hamamatsu, Japan, and giant creature kite shows put on by the 'Berkeley Kite Wranglers and Friends'.

Visitors can also receive hands-on demonstrations of the latest kite products from 'Ozone Kites', 'Revolution Kites' and 'Prism Designs". Children are also invited to free kite making lessons, while families are provided with thier own, large kite-flying area.

When lunch time comes, a huge array of food will be available, from sushi to seafood, corn on the cob, onion rings, and 'Ben and Jerry's' ice cream, along with an array of souvenir shops to visit. To save a little money, you can always pack a picnic lunch.

Thousands of kites and products will also be on sale, from beginner, intermediate and advanced, to low-wind kites, to exotic parafoils with prices ranging from $16.99 to $599.00.

Above all, be make sure you take in the breathtaking kite competitions, especially the famous air ballet--where kites tumble, twirl, dance and dart through the air, accompanied by fantastic musical ballads.

And, don't miss the exciting kite battles, where the object is to sever the enemy's kite line(string) with your own line that's been dipped in a glass-like resin!

For added enjoyment, you may want to arrive at the park an hour earlier than planned, to avoid parking hassles. Parking is $10, and includes free shuttle service to all venues--and remember to bring a coat just in case! Tricky winds at a marina may spell chills at the end of the day.

To find the event from Hwy 80 (East Shore Freeway), take the University Ave exit in Berkeley. Go West towards the Bay. As you approach the Marina, follow signs leading to the Double Tree Hotel. Go a half-mile past the hotel to the "turning circle' at Cesar E. Chavez Park, and look for the kites in the sky!

Palo Alto Friday night jam session at Lytton Plaza at the Apple store.
Susan Webb started this on January 22, and it took off. Every Friday since it’s been a jam session. Anyone passing by is welcome to join her. If you’re a aspiring musician, and you want to be heard go to Lytton Plaza in Palo Alto. Palo Alto is keeping the music going in down town on a Friday night. I have not been but, I sure will make it a point to go before the summers over.

The RISKS of driving on a suspended license.

More and more California motorists seem willing to take a big risk by continuing to drive a car or motor cycle on a revoked or suspended drivers license! Aside from breaking the law, it's dumb, extremely expensive, and often more costly to the driver's family and friends!

California Vehicle Code 14601 prohibits driving when you know your drivers license has been suspended or revoked. While only a misdemeanor, this crime could land first-time offenders in jail for not less than 5 days, be fined not less than $300.

Obviously the penaltlies multiply for further convictions, and are even steeper for DUI offenders...however, there's another major consequence. Upon each arrest, the vehicle is immediatly impounded, towed, and stored for a minumum of 30 days, and what's worse...quite often the offender is driving someone elses car!

I'll share a true life example of this, and how an innocent car owner suddenly became a victim too! A friend of mine loaned the family's second car(a Suburu Legacy hatchback) to his 21-year old step-daughter to go pick up a friend. She'd done this before when her own car was out of commission for one reason or another.

What he and his wife did not know was that his step-daughter had two outstanding warrents for un-paid traffic tickets, and had her drivers license suspended! That afternoon she was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer for running a stop sign near the intersection of Bascom Avenue and San Carlos Street in San Jose, California.

She was taken to jail, and the Suburu was towed to a yard in Santa Clara, California, not far from the CHP headquarters on Zanker Road.

My friend was suddenly caught in a financial mess. Even if he chose not to bail-out his step-daughter, how was he going to afford losing his car for 30 days....and paying tow and storage charges of close to $2000?

Also, this second car was used to transport he and his wife's handicapped granddaughter(and wheelchair) to doctors appointments, as well as other family needs! It was more than just the money! It was the inconvenience!

However, as hard as my friend pleaded with the CHP, state law requires 30 days impound, unless, in certain instances...you can manage to get the offending drivers license re-instated, and show proof with DMV documentation.

Fortunatly, my friend took an extra step and decided to visit the CHP office with his step-daughter, to discuss any possible options with the CHP sergent in charge. This particular officer was very understanding, and agreed to release the car from impound....if his step daughter promised to take care of her tickets and get her license re-instated.

My friend was lucky! He got his Suburu back that afternoon, however, he still had to pay the tow company $335, but that's a lot cheaper than $2000!

I have a feeling there are many more car owners and family members suffering a much worse fate than my friend and his step-daughter. Should you find yourself in a similiar mess you may try what my friend did, and get lucky.

However, the best advice is to be VERY CAREFUL who you loan your car to....if anyone at all! As for you violators, GET REAL! SMARTIN UP! It's dumb enough to ignore paying your tickets. Why be an even bigger idiot by letting them go to warrent...and having your drivers license suspended in the first place.

The High Cost Of Driving Drunk

2,000 people a year die from drunk driving auto accidents in the United States. Of the 900,000 annual DUI arrests, more than one-third are repeat offenders! That fact is astounding! You would think THEY WOULD LEARN the first time, seeing as how deadly, dumb, and costly driving drunk is!

The sad stories pile up every day, and not just in America. The latest international tragedy happened yesterday. South Africa's beloved anti-apartheid icon 'Nelson Mandela' planned on attending the opening ceremonies of World Cup Soccer being hosted in his hometown of Johannesburg.

Instead, he stayed home with his family, mourning the death of his 13-year old great-granddaughter Zenani who was killed in a car accident after attending a concert the night before.

The man driving the car lost control and slammed into a barrier, after which he was found to be drunk, was arrested on site, and faces serious charges, including homicide. He probably won't see the light of day again for a long time, let alone have another chance to drive drunk!

However, millions of other drivers suffering from far less, grave circumstances, somehow manage to take even more chances....and get caught again! Then, they get flattened again with enormous financial losses that are so hefty--it seems impossible for anyone short of a millionaire to afford!

Young drivers just starting out should pay attention to this, especially those in California, where DUI frequency is ranked in the upper third nationwide. Here is a financial breakdown of just how much it costs for your first, "routine" DUI issued in California!

I'm happy to say I've never been cited for DUI, and that covers 37 years of driving in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in San Jose and Campbell where I grew up, and also much of the state....including 7-years in Bakersfield, and two years in Reno Nevada.

For me, it took only one colossal drunk driving episode of stupidity and luck at the same time, to learn my lesson!. My freshman year at San Jose State University, I drank wine for the first time, and put down 7 or 8-glasses at a fraternity party.

When I woke up on my bedroom floor with a pounding, sick hangover... I had no idea how I got there, and no recollection of driving home!

I kept thinking miserably-- what happened during that 8-mile ride I DON'T REMEMBER....from downtown 10th street....on to Hwy 280...exiting at Southwest Expressway...down Meridian Ave....and HOME! HOW!

I immediately hit my knees and thanked God for not being one of those fools who never wake up from this! That very revelation scared the hell out of me....forever! I never did that again, ever!

My very best friend was not so lucky. He often prided himself on being able to skillfully drink and drive. One day long ago, I had to pick him up from a drunk tank in Hollister, California....where he also told me, "he didn't remember how he got there, hung over on a jail cell floor!"

It took him a few more mistakes, many thousands of dollars, and six years without his license to finally see the light. Today, he is richer, happier, and totally sober, having raised a wonderful family. Neither of us uses alcohol, and that's a good story...being able to joke about the wild old days!

We both learned our lessons in different ways, but the key for all young California drivers...and drivers everywhere--is not to drink and drive at all! No need to learn any lessons! Just DON'T do it. You'll save lives....and lots of money!

Just this past Saturday June 5, 2010, a 11 year old girl lost her life when she drowned in the delta in Pittsburgh California. This is a common occurrence, during the summertime. People can’t wait to get to the water.

It is my opinion, swimming in Deltas and Reservoirs are not safe.

Anytime you have running water there is a undertow even the most experience swimmer can drown.

Last summer this happen to a friend of mines son. He was swimming in Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos California, like he had done a dozen times. The witnesses said he had, went under the water and never came back up. The officials said he probably got caught in a under tow.

If people are going to continue to swim in Deltas and Reservoirs life jackets should be mandatory. I think they should make it a law no swimming in Deltas and Reservoirs. How many more lives have to be lost before they take this serious problem. This tragedy last Saturday didn’t have to happen. I say to all parents don’t let your kids swim in Deltas and Reservoirs it’s not worth their lives just for a few hours of fun..

Santa Clara Traffic

Check out the entrance to Santa Clara's Traffic Court on Homestead Street every weekday morning or afternoon. It is always lined with city police cars, motorcycle units, and CHP vehicles who's officers are inside testifying against the many drivers they issue tickets to.

Still, motorists continue to speed, even though Santa Clara's city streets are unusually filled with radar traps....especially just west of the San Jose Airport on both DeLaCruz Blvd and Lafayette Streets.

I travel those corridors every day for work, and it seems I'm either changing lanes to let speeders pass, or watching them get tickets on the side of the road! It's not that I'm some "goody goody" slow-poke who never breaks the speed limit, but it's not that hard to see cops pointing radar guns at you!

They are always there, where Coleman Ave becomes DeLaCruz Blvd....stretching past the Hwy 101 interchange. Yet, folks continue to plow through at well over the 40mph speed limit, which should be fast enough for them!

Heading to work the morning of April 6th, I saw three cars pulled over by motorcycle cops. Then, I saw two more getting tickets(on DeLaCruz Blvd) on my way home! It occures to me those getting cited, and those getting away with it--are creating a very DANGEROUS situation on a heavily populated street.

For whatever reason, they are not paying attention. They are driving as if with "tunnel vision". They are headed for either danger or an expensive citation. They need to SLOW DOWN!

I even saw a driver get pulled over ahead of me as three cops just stood in the middle of the street.(Aviation Rd.) They stopped the whole group of us.(7or8 cars) Then, they physically led the lead car to the side for a ticket, by way of this unusual speed trap.

The Santa Clara Police Department seems to be making a statement....Slow Down! We should heed this advice, in Santa Clara, and in every city in the Bay Area.

I had friends from out of town one of them was a Jazz and R an B Singer from Florida she wanted to check out the Jazz and R an B scene, but we did not fill like driving to San Francisco or Oakland. I found two live spots to go and listen to live music this past week. The first spot was right down the street from where I live called the Three Flames at 1547 Meridian Avenue San Jose, CA 95125. For all you Jazz lovers, there’s a Swing Jazz band called Modesto Briseno Septet from 7:30 to 10:30 pm on Tuesday, come dance or sit back and groove to their Blues-ey Jazz style. If you can’t get out on Tuesday there’s always Sunday night too they have Latin Jazz added to there repertoire. Come out and get your Salsa on from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, there is no cover charge. The second spot is a place I used to frequent back in the 90s, called The Number One Broadway 102 South Santa Cruz Avenue Los Gatos Ca. 95030. If you play an instrument or sing you can come put your name on the list and sit in with The JC band on Thursday nights from 10:00pm to 1:00pm. They play R an B this is definitely a kick back atmosphere, there’s dancing and no cover charge. My friends and I had a great time we didn’t have to take a long drive, If your looking for something different to do, check out these two spots you will have a great time.

Satisfying the "Need for Speed"!

Did you ever want to know what it feels like to get behind the wheel of a race car, and drive as fast as you can while making the sharpest turns, never worrying about injury or getting a ticket?

At "Go Kart Racer" in Burlingame, California....fantasy becomes reality, seven days a week! Go Kart Racer is a huge, indoor facility located a block west of the 'Bay shore Freeway'(Hwy101) just off the Broadway St. exit at 1541 Adrian Road.

It has the largest indoor track (3/8mile) in the United States, featuring three, European-designed courses called the Yokohama, Monza, and Super Track, with state of the art go karts, hair-pin and high speed turns, and an excellent staff of safety officials and customer service hosts.

This is a great place for family members, groups of friends, and corporate teams to enjoy great, road racing competition....while fulfilling the pure, powerful, adrenaline rush desired by all of us "road hogs"!

I speak from personal experience two months ago...my first ever! My boss, Streetwise President Michael Ealey, who's on the board of directors of the 'California Delivery Association', sent me there to race against six other members....including the CDA President, Andrew Brady.

Michael would have gone, but, since he stands 6-feet 8 inches tall, he thought I'd be a better fit. Well, we had a blast! We all met there for a catered lunch, were fitted into racing suits and helmets, saw a rules and instructional video, and hit the track for ten-minutes of practice laps, and a grueling 20-minute race.

I have never felt that kind of ground speed in a car, nor endured a tougher arm and body workout from making all those tight turns. I have much more respect now for professional race car drivers, many of whom began racing in go karts. More on that later.

As for our racing finish, it turns out Michael may have fared better than me! Let's just say I wouldn't have claimed any prize money....had any been offered. They did give us a nice victory celebration, and, although it would have been nice to stand on the podium, I still had fun! WE all did, and it was great exercise too!

While working as a TV sportscaster in Bakersfield, California in the 1980's,I got to know the famous Mears racing family, otherwise known as "The Mears Gang". Rick went onto win the Indy 500 four times(2 while I was there), while older brother Roger won 4-Baja 1000's! They both began racing on go karts as kids! So did their sons Roger Jr.,Casey,(now a NASCAR champ) Rick's son Clint, and current superstar Kevin Harvick.

So did other racing legends I had the privilege of interviewing, such as: Mario Andretti, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan Bill Elliott, Bobby Allison and Rusty Wallace. All went on to stardom, and all began in go karts during their early days. To me, go carting is as fast as I want to go!

'Go Kart Racer' has also had its share of famous visitors to the track, including Jerry Rice, Jason Kidd, Michael Strahan, MC Hammer, Jon Fogherty, and even the late Paul Newman.

If you're interested in testing your driving skills, 'Go Kart Racer requires you have a valid drivers license, and those ages 12-17 are allowed a special driving school course. Those pregnant, or with back or heart ailments, are not advised to drive, however, for the rest of us it's a safe, well-run, high-caliber experience,of speed, hard turns,and thrills.(no bumping allowed)

As for the cost: 10-minute hot laps are $25 each and $20 each additional lap.

Races are $45 each, which includes 20-minutes of between 20-30 laps.($40 dollars for each additional race)

The grand prix course includes 30-minutes of between 50 and 60 laps on the track, and that costs $60-dollars. For me, it was well worth it! You should try it too....at least once!

The World's Biggest Haunted House

The largest 'haunted house' in the world sits squarely in the heart of Santa Clara County. The "Winchester Mystery House'" is located at 525 Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California, right next door to 'Century 21 Theater'(1st of the Century theaters) and one block west of 'Santana Row' Shopping Center.

Having grown up just ten-blocks away, this California Historical Landmark has always been a local treat for me, whether just driving by or taking the tour over the years. I used to get discounts, because three of my seven siblings worked there as tour guides!

Rumor has it the place is haunted...and, IT IS! (in my opinion) Why else would they call it a "mystery house"! To understand why its 160 rooms stretch seven stories high, have 47 fireplaces, and took over 38-years to build--you have to take a peek into American history!

Sarah Pardee and William Wirt Winchester were married in New Haven, Connecticut during the Civil War in 1862.. Prior to that, William invented the famous Winchester repeating rifle, and amassed a fortune.

The couple's only daughter Annie, died shortly after birth, thus tearing them apart emotionally. In 1881, William died of tuberculosis, leaving Sarah with a second heart-ache...and a 20-million dollar inheritance!

Upon consulting a psycic, Sarah was convinced her family was cursed by all the deaths incurred by the rifles, and decided to move toward the western sunset. Arriving in the Santa Clara Valley in 1884, she bought a six-room house on 162-acres--for which it was foretold she needed to build upon constantly...or else...die!

She did just that...BUILD, in radical fashion! Sarah eventually employed 22 carpenters working 24 hours a day, often 7-days a week. Along with three elevators, there were numerous stairways built, some of which led to dead end walls....along with upside down stair posts, trap doors, un-explained passages, bathroom doors made of glass, closets that emptied into open air and a fall to the garden, countless chimneys, and only two mirrors existing in the entire mansion. Sarah believed that ghosts feared their own reflections, and they also liked to appear and re-appear in her many chimmneys.

What was weird to most, made control-freak type sense to Sarah, who constantly wanted to maintain a strangle-hold on ghosts, spirits and other evil intruders who continually haunted her fortune--which, again, came from making that deadly rifle!

Sarah was also obsessed with the number 13, having most windows built with 13 panes of glass, 13 panels on each wall, and parkay floors with squares 13 feet wide and 13 feet long. Meanwhile, the constant hammering and delivering of new materials to the mansion finally eased up in 1906.

That's when the infamous San Francisco earthquake rocked and damaged the mystery house as well, partially trapping Sarah in one of the rooms. As imagined, she started building again, and didn't stop for 16 more years! The construction finally came to an end with Sarah Winchester's death in 1922, and the estate was inherited by a niece, Francis Marriott--who soon realized Sarah's fortune had dwindled to nearly nothing.

It was rumored there was a hidden safe filled with a fortune in gold and priceless jewels, however the safe's that were eventually discovered contained nothing but fish lines, old socks and newspaper clippings.

In 38 years Sarah spent 5.5-million dollars building the Winchester Mystery House. That converts to about 75-million in today's dollars!

It became a California Historical Landmark in 1930, as Robert L. Ripley was one of the first to showcase it as a popular tourist attraction in his daily column, "Ripley's Believe it or Not!" Today it remains just that, a tourist attraction!

Over the years there have been thousands of stories about voices moaning, walls knocking, cold spots in certain rooms, floors shaking and mysterious whistles and howls nearing closing time when the tours end.

My younger brother Rob once told me one of the employees was accidently locked in the compound over night, and when morning came...he was found white-faced, trembling and incoherant following a night of haunting fear and emotional trauma.

Can you believe that? I can, in my own, fun kind of way...especially around Halloween! Come on! Where's YOUR spirit???

Should you find the desire to find out for yourself, both mansion and estate tours run daily from 9am to 7pm.(unless it's really dark by then) It costs more than when I was a kid though.(sorry) $33.00 for adults and $30.00 for children and seniors. It may seem frightenly expensive, but it's well worth visiting...at least once in your lifetime!

Spring time is here, every ones out enjoying the weather after all the rain we had. San Jose Flea Market is one of my favorite place to go in San Jose when the weather is nice, I have been going to the San Jose Flea Market since I was five year old. Just about Forty five years later, I still get excited about going to San Jose Flea Market. When I was five, I like going just for the corn dogs, cotton candy and the carousel ride.

When I became a teen, I like going with my girl friends, so we could shop and meet boys. Now I strictly go to see what treasures I can find and oh!

If you haven’t been in awhile or you never been, you must go and explore more than 8 miles of colorful alleys of shopping , enjoy the 25 restaurants and the dozen of snack carts. San Jose Flea Market has the largest Farmers Market in California. San Jose Flea Market has something for all ages. For the youngsters there is the old fashion carousel, three new play grounds. If your to old for the carousel or play ground there is a cool arcade.

How to avoid paying for traffic tickets!

Subject: How to avoid paying for traffic tickets!

First off, I've gotten five traffic tickets over the past 17-years, two for speeding and three for moving violations. I paid for only one of them, but I didn't just blow them off! People who try that end up paying much more, and their lives take a drastic turn for the worse!

I beat paying for most of my tickets by getting them legally dismissed, but it wasn't easy. My method takes a little extra effort and some luck.--with no guarantees.

Before I share it with you, the best way to avoid paying for tickets is not to get them at all! That's accomplished by driving safely, obeying all laws, and observing the speed limit. However, should you manage to get one or two, as happens to the best of us, take care of them on time!

When I was a teenager, I missed the payment deadline by two days, and the judge slapped me with a failure to appear which doubled the fine. Then he warned me that if it happened again, I'd be in for grave trouble...with a capital G!! It never happened again.

I will now share my method, using the most recent ticket:   I was on a courier run for 'Streetwise Special Delivery', driving medical equipment from San Jose, California to a surgeon's residence in Redding, California....and my boss rented me a fast, six-cylinder Chevy Impala to cover the 670-mile trip.

I made the delivery by 10:15pm, and immediately headed back, stopping just once for coffee. The drive was smooth, wide-open and a little speedy at times, as the rental car was more powerful than I was used to. I really had to watch the speedometer, which slipped past 80mph a few times.

By 2:30am I was southbound on Hwy 680, just crossing the Dublin 580 interchange in Pleasanton, when the red lights flashed behind me. A CHP officer pulled me over at Stoneridge Avenue, and gave me a speeding ticket for going 81mph. When I checked the speedometer it read 74mph, but the cop maintained I had already slowed down a bit. This happened on June 8th, 2009.

Here is what I did to beat this.  When the citation arrived by mail, I called the court to request an extension. Most grant you 30 extra days.(some may offer more) This bought me an extra 60-days. A week prior to that deadline, I called back and scheduled a walk-in appointment in order to schedule a court date to fight the ticket.

I then drove to Pleasanton, waited in line for 20-minutes, sat in court for another 30-minutes, and plead not guilty.  At the clerk's window I asked for the latest court date possible, and was happily appointed February 25th, 2010, almost nine-months after I first got the ticket!

This is the key to success! Extend, extend, extend--but don't miss the court date! With any luck, so much time will have passed that the citing officer transfers out, or blows off court because it's his day off. Maybe this is his sleep time, which often happens with graveyard citations. Also, CHP officers do not get paid to appear in court, unless its during their normal work shift. The same goes for city police and sheriff officers.

Plus, if he does show up, what can you lose? You'll probably end up paying, but the judge may actually reduce the fine. If not, you'll just be granted another 60-days to pay.(or some other payment arrangement)

On February 25th of last month, I walked into a courtroom filled with people and CHP officers, but not mine!   CASE DISMISSED! The same thing happened long ago with two other tickets that I had legitimate beefs with. However, neither officer showed, and both tickets were dismissed as well. The other ticket happened down the street where I live, and the San Jose Police officer did appear, however, the judge ruled he'd set-up an un-authorized speed trap, and threw my case out!

Am I just lucky or what? Remember now, in each case I extended, extended, extended--to the limit of the law, and my patience seemed to pay off! I must have saved more than $1000 in fines, and some pretty high insurance premiums over the years, simply because I figured a way to, at least, improve the odds of beating a traffic ticket!

I won't get cocky though, after all I drive for a living. It's my job to get things delivered safely! NO MORE TICKETS FOR ME!

Walking out of court that day, I also managed to chat with CHP motorcycle traffic officer about some interesting traffic facts. He told me they receive no money from traffic fines, and the CHP have no set quotas for issuing tickets. He also told me that 3 or 4 of every ten drivers display bad attitudes when getting stopped. It makes a big difference! "The rest are cool, and save lots of money", he said.

He gave an example where he pulled a guy over going 92mph, however, the driver was so pleasant that he only wrote him for doing 74mph. "Had that same guy cussed me out or gave me trouble, I could have arrested him for reckless driving...which is a huge fine and 3 points on his record",he said..

So remember, drive safely, avoid getting tickets, be nice to cops if you do, and fight them all in court by using my "extend" method. You just may save yourself some hefty fines, high insurance premiums, and that dreaded 8-hour driving class!

How To Handle Getting Flipped Off On The Road

Who among us can honestly say his or her driving hasn't, at one time or other, elicited "the finger" from a fellow motorist? We've ALL been "flipped off" from time to time.

My first incident happened when I was 21-years old, lean and dressed to the 9's in a tuxedo, heading to my parents house to pick them up for a wedding(not mine). I was about to turn right on to Curtner Ave. from Meridian Ave. in San Jose, California, when this gorgeous girl changed lanes from behind me, pulled along side and swiftly flipped me "the bird"!

I was stunned. (I must have accidentally cut her off.) All I could do was shrug my shoulders, as she flashed a quick smile and sped off. I guess that wasn't so bad, however, what happened two days ago...was even better!

Heading southbound on De La Cruz Blvd. in Santa Clara, California, I eased down to the speed limit as is a daily habit between Martin and Reed Avenue, because Santa Clara traffic cops constantly patrol that corridor with radar. In fact, I had just noticed a motorcycle unit about 100-yards up, pointing his lidar-gun in my direction....when at the same moment, this pick-up truck sped-up behind me from out of nowhere.

The driver laid on his horn, changed lanes and raced by while vigorously flipping me off, as he flew past. Unfortunately, whatever satisfaction he may have enjoyed was short-lived! From my rear-view mirror, I saw the motorcycle cop pull out and blow by me to flag down the fast-fingered driver.

Upon catching up, I noticed the stopped driver's right hand cupped over his forehead , displaying a much more civil gesture! Unfortunately, flipping someone off or getting flipped off seldom ends with a ticket or a peaceful chuckle. Thousands of road rage incidents stem from this foul hand gesture, leading to violence, injury and death...among other things.

Take what happened last year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. An Australian businessman living and working there got mad and flipped off a local driver, who then followed him home, beat him up, and called the police. The local driver happened to be an Arab-Emirates Government official. The Australian was immediately thrown in jail for a month, and then deported along with his working wife.

This past June, a 62-year old New Jersey man was killed after crazily chasing down a young woman who had flipped him off. His front bumper clipped her from behind, sending his car flipping out of control, and ejecting him.

"The bird" can get you into trouble elsewhere, too. At the Canadian Legislature in the province of New Brunswick recently, a Liberal Party official flipped-off a Progressive Conservative adversary during a debate, and was suspended for three days without pay!

Back on the road, the simplest rule is to never, never, flip anyone off! Ignore it, and AVOID danger. But, what about receiving the insulting gesture? A woman in Foster City, California suffered extreme anxiety following her first episode, when a man tailgated and flipped her off repeatedly, before finally turning the corner in another direction. She couldn't stop wondering what she'd done wrong. "Couldn't the man see I was helpless and alone, with a baby in the back seat?", she wondered.

After a week of poor sleep, the woman finally called a handful of girlfriends to see how they handled getting flipped off, and some of thier answers made sense. One would slap the side of her head and whisper the words 'I'm sorry'...which got an "ok, no problem" reaction.

Another woman met the bird by blowing back a kiss, while another, into Yoga yelled back "Go to Yoga" to any naughty hand signals. A final remedy was to pick up the cell phone and act as if you're calling the police! This usually did the trick, and these ideas finally gave the anxious woman some piece-of-mind.

As mentioned in a previous blog, the best way to deal with unkind, aggressive driving behavior is to steer clear of it, by driving safely, ignoring horns, verbal insults or the infamous bird flip which can often inflame road rage incidents..

Should danger persist despite avoidance or apology, use your cell phone to call for help, and drive to either a police station or other populated area...but, NEVER drive strait home....at least not until totally clear of of danger. This is all COMMON SENSE. Use it!

What Not To Do During An Earthquake

You may have already read Streetwise blogger LM's fantastic article on earthquake survival in the Streetwise Courier, which details how to stock-up and prepare for life after a horrific quake. Now, I'm going to re-inform you on how to reach that point, in other words....how to survive during the initial moments of destruction and the collapse that follows, as happened in Haiti last month.

As school children we were all taught to "duck and cover", by getting under our desks to protect ourselves from falling debris....or to stand in an open doorway under the frame, which is the strongest part of the building.

However, according to Doug Copp, one of the top disaster rescue experts in the world, this is exactly what NOT to do, and is in fact....is dead wrong! Literally!

Copp is chief of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the most experienced disaster rescue team in the world, and claims his information in this article is both factual, and will save lives in an earthquake:

"I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, and worked in every major disaster since 1985. The first building I crawled into was a school in Mexico City during the '85 quake. Every child was under its desk, and every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles", said Copp.

"SIMPLY STATED, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceiling falling on objects or furniture crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them. This space is what I call "the triangle of life". The larger and stronger the object, the less it will compact. The less it compacts, the larger the void and the greater the probability that the person in that safety void will NOT be injured."

The following is a list of Doug Copp's VALUABLE TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY:

1-Most everyone who simply "ducks and covers" when buildings collapse are crushed to death. Do not get under objects like desks or automobiles.

2-Cats, dogs and babies often curl up into the fetal position. You should too during an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct that allows one to survive in a small void. Get next to an object, sofa or large bulky object that will compress and leave a void next to it.

3-Wooden buildings are the safest to be in because wood is flexible, and moves with the force of the quake. Wood also has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks causing many injuries, but far less squashed bodies than with concrete slabs.

4-If you're in bed during an earthquake, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around it. Hotels should all post these rules on the back of every room door, insuring a greater survival rate.

5-If an earthquake occurs and you can't escape by door or window, lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa or large chair.

6-Don't get under an open doorway frame during a building collapse. Why? Because if the doorjam falls forward or backward, you'll be crushed by the ceiling above. If the doorjam falls sideways, you will be cut in half by the doorway. Either way, you will die!

7-NEVER go to the stairs! Stairs swing separately from the main part of the building, and continually smash into the other parts of the building until structural failure takes place. People on stairs are chopped up and mutilated by the stair treads. Even if left intact, stairwells may collapse when overloaded by fleeing people. Stay off the stairs!

8-Get near the outer walls of buildings, or OUTSIDE of them if possible. It's better to be outside the building than inside, because the further inside the perimeter, the less chance of escape.

9-People inside their cars during a quake are crushed to death when the road above caves in on them. This is exactly what happened between the decks of the 'Nimitz Freeway' in the Oakland, San Francisco Bay Area during the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. The victims all stayed inside of their vehicles and were killed. They could easily have survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their cars, because all of the crushed cars had voids 3-feet high next to them.

10-It was discovered that a collapsed newspaper office, and other offices with lots of stacked paper were much more earthquake safe, because paper does not compact! Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper!

Finally, Mr. Copp made a film 14-years ago that proved his survival methodology correct, by collapsing a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside, and then simulating with scientific detail....an actual earthquake.

Ten mannequins did "duck and cover", while the other ten used Copp's "triangle of life" survival method. After sifting through the rubble, Copp's ten mannequins had survived. The remaining ten....did not.

We should all be dummies not to want to save thousands of lives by sharing valuable information like this regarding earthquakes, and the many other natural calamities that threaten our existance.

Have you ever been to New Orleans Louisiana? The sound of music is everywhere, the smell of food cooking makes you want to eat! eat! eat!.
San Jose has two New Orleans style bistro’s. There’s the Poor House Bistro at 91 S. Autumn Street in near downtown San Jose. You can go to this joint and get your grub on with some Jambalaya, Crawfish Pasta, and Sausage Bread just to name a few of my favorites. While your grubbing down, you can listen to some good soul music by Lara Price & Yesterday Band on Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm. The Poor House Bistro is one of the joints you want to be at you have your choice of days Tuesday through Sunday. The other bistro is Bourbon Street Bistro located at 5635 Silver Creek Valley Road in San Jose, opened last July 2009. I went to Bourbon Street Bistro this month and I can say I was pleasantly surprised, the menu had a variety of taste of New Orleans. A few of my favorites dishes were Gumbo, Etouffee and Shrimp PoBoy Sandwich, The music was a collection of Jazz and Blues, the band was Noel & Friends you can catch them on Wednesdays between 7pm and 10pm.. I think Bourbon Street Bistro is going to be the place to go for good food and good music.

HAITI’S CHALLENGES

The country of Haiti has had serious challenges throughout it’s past and present. The years between 1791 through 1803 there was the Haitian Revolution, this was a violent time in Haiti’s history. In the 1900s, U.S.
Marines occupied Haiti from 1915 through 1934, another violent and bloody part of Haiti’s past. Haiti once was the richest colony in the New World, with the man made and natural disasters it is one of the poorest of the Caribbean. With this last earthquake on January 12, 2010 Port-au-Prince is in ruins, with the Hundreds of thousand of lives lost and millions of homeless is going to take years to rebuild Haiti. It’s going to take help from the international community, to help rebuild this poor country. We can all help by going www.redcross.org to find out what we can do to help this country to heal. If everyone donated 50 cents that would be a great start.

Move Over Law

How many California drivers don't know there's a law requiring motorists to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with lights flashing while stopped on the side of the road? The law is SB1610, and it includes safely steering clear of CalTrans workers, police officers, fire trucks, ambulances, and tow trucks.

We are already required to pull over and make way for approaching emergency vehicles with sirens or lights flashing. This law instructs drivers to safely slow down and/or change lanes (more than one lane adjacent to) any stopped emergency vehicle. Violators face a $50 fine.

The California Highway Patrol originally rejected this law in 2005, arguing that pulling over violators would place traffic and drivers in more danger. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed by vetoing the bill, saying, "This law could result in unintended consequences and additional road hazzards".

However, SB1610 was eventually passed in 2006 before expiring last month, and then re-instated by the Governor on January 1, 2010. Sponsoring Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto says the "Move Over, Slow Down" law closely resembles similiar laws in more than 40 states.

"This bill is about promoting highway safety, plain and simple, says Simitian. "I hope it puts a stop to the senseless deaths of police officers, tow truck drivers, paramedics and other emergency personnel out there simply helping stranded motorists".

Over the past five years more than a dozen police and state road workers have been killed along California roads. The latest was CalTrans worker Don Lichliter, who was struck down by a passing truck in Lodi on July 23, 2009. Since 1924, 176 CalTrans employees have died from roadside accidents.

North Carolina was the first of 45 states to pass such a law in 2002, following the injury or death of 66 state troopers over three-year period. Violators there are fined $250.

If you think that's expensive try Virginia, where passing a stopped police officer without changing lanes is a first degree misdemeanor punishable by a $2500 fine! This may be a bit steep, however, the message here seems clear!

Use common sense! Drive defensively by seeing the BIG picture! (Remember drivers ed. class?) Above all, pay attention around, and, ahead of you....particularly with emergency vehicles.

After all, our law enforcement and emergency professionals put thier lives on the line to protect us every day! Slowing down or changing lanes to give these first responders enough room to work safely, is the least we can do in return! Move over California! It's the law!

How to avoid a 2nd accident!

It is often more dangerous the first moments after a traffic accident, than during the initial collision. I witnessed a close call Thursday afternoon in Santa Clara, California that reminded me of this.

I was coming out of the lobby of a company I deliver to daily at the intersection of De La Cruz Blvd. and Martin Avenue which runs just west of The San Jose Airport. A two car accident had just happened at that intersecting stop light. I know because I was only in the office five-minutes, and was just returning to my car.

Two badly damaged vehicles were facing south, side by side on the right portion of the intersection and light. Both drivers had been escorted by witnesses to the south lawn of a strip mall across the street, and while dazed and shaken...neither looked seriously injured.

However, I did notice heavy traffic sifting through the intersection at a bumper to bumper pace, passing very close on both sides of the vehicles. It looked like another accident waiting to happen, and almost did!

As the sirens began sounding in the distance, one of the drivers got up from the lawn and began to stagger crookedly toward her car, probably to retrieve something...and came dangerously close to getting struck down by passing motorists.

Luckily, a transportation officer grabbed her just as she was about to stumble and fall. This could have been a disaster that's happened many times before! All it takes is a victim wandering recklessly without realizing they're in shock and/or suffering from a concussion. Add to that rubber-necking drivers who often smash into one another as well as roadside pedestrians.

Years ago I was a passenger during a t-bone collision in East San Jose that left me pretty beat-up and bruised. We were all very lucky, however, I do remember waking up sitting on the curb after blacking out! I also had a caring bystander standing by to catch me after I began to stumble around in the intersection...with a concussion.

Here are a few ways to avoid a potential second or third accident at the same scene. If you're there to actually help out, carefully secure yourself and any victims far away from traffic or other danger....while consoling and comforting them until help arrives.

When driving past an accident, be cautious, courtious and aware of obstacles, pedestrians, the car in front of you, and any traffic instructions. Help out by being careful....and don't rubber-neck! That way we'll always keep it down to just ONE accident, which is bad enough as it is.

An Expensive U-Turn

Have you ever made an illegal u-turn without realizing it? Perhaps you didn't notice the posted sign, but your passenger sure did, and loudly called it to your attention!

Have you ever scoped out the area for cops before intentionally making that u-turn anyway? Be honest! I'll bet at least 90-percent of you have!

I have....once or twice over the years. Like most of You I got away with it....but, I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it. These days there are lots of camera's out there filling in for police, and the tickets you get in the mail are just as expensive. It's also dangerous!

This brings to mind two personal experiences on the road. The first happened last year in Fremont, California. I was cited for what I considered a bogus grid-lock violation at the Southland Mall on Mowry Avenue.

I took the ticket to court and won when the cop never showed, but before that I watched several other cases fail miserably. Most were photo traffic citations caught on video cameras! The judge actually called each driver up to his bench, and had them watch their violation play-out....right there on his computer monitor!

They had little or no room to argue, against something much tougher that any citing police officer. I also noted a good many illegal u-turn cases. I'll bet each driver THOUGHT they'd gotten away with it...but didn't!

The other personal event happened today in Santa Clara. I was westbound on Lafayette Street waiting for a green light where it intersects at El Camino Real. To my right was a motorcycle cop also waiting to cross sorthbound.

Directly across from me was a lady who made a poor decision. When our signal turned green she decided to cross the double-yellow line in front of the light, and make a forced u-turn. Sure enough she stranded herself illegally against the curb blocking me and two lanes of traffic.

I cautiously eased forward while glancing toward to cop to my right, and we both shook our heads. He quickly cracked a smile, cut in front of me and flashed his red lights to pull her over.

My point is, either way you may want to try it....don't do it again unless it's legal, especially in front of motorcycle police, and more specifically in Fremont, Newark and Campbell, California where most photo ticketing occurs.

Even if you're in a hurry, take the time to make it legal, safe and, less expensive!

Holiday Checkpoint Season

It's holiday checkpoint season again, and time for local police and The California Highway Patrol to put up random sobriety roadblocks. But, just how necessary are they, and what restrictions govern them regarding the rights of motorists?

The fourth amendment to the Constitution protects people from being stopped without a search warrant, or at least "probable cause" that they've committed a crime. While the US Supreme Court did make an exemption regarding DUI checkpoints, eleven states have still outlawed them...following a landmark 1990 ruling in Michigan that granted permission to uphold outstanding state law.

Here in California, the CHP maintains that checkpoints reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roads and highways, and diminishes the amount of pain, suffering and death that result from drunk driving. Still, 51-percent of all drivers in America fall victim to at least one alchohol-related accident, while one person dies every 22 minutes from a drunk driving accident. The current annual death toll is at 11, 888.

No matter how grim the numbers, sobriety checkpoints must still follow strict protocol laid out by the California Supreme Court. Checkpoint locations must be chosen by supervisory police officers, not field officers. Advanced notice must also be given, while location of road blocks is not required. Police must also us a a neutral mathematical formula when stopping drivers, such as....every car, or every 3rd car etc.

Motorist safety must be a primary concern, with police providing proper lighting, warning signs and signals. Checkpoints should be only open when traffic volume allows safe operation. In fact, checkpoints open during late evening hours on major holidays. Here in San Jose, the next checkpoints are scheduled for December 31st between 8pm and 3am.

Officers are also not allowed to detain drivers longer than it takes to ask a few questions, while looking and smelling for obvious signs of intoxication. If cleared, the driver should be swiftly waived through, while those showing signs of impairment are taken to a seperate area for a field sobriety test. I recently discovered one other, unusual restriction during a personal road experience.

While driving north-bound on Bascom Avenue in San Jose this past Labor Day weekend, I came upon a checkpoint just past the stoplight at Stokes Avenue. As I eased behind a slow line of cars heading for the blinking signs, I noticed a few cars making sudden U-turns in an obvious attempt to avoid the road block. Even the driver in front of me darted left onto a double-yellow line and into a 7'11 parking lot. Isn't that illegal, I thought? Can't the cops stop them for that? None were around to see them!

According to the Supreme Court, motorists may NOT be stopped while seeking to avoid a checkpoint. However, if the ditching driver commits a vehicle code violation, or shows obvious signs of intoxication...police can pull them over. Next evening the Bascom Avenue checkpoint was back up, but a half-mile closer to Valley Medical Center this time,and pointed North.

Curiously, I joined the checkpoint line again, but, this time a half-dozen patrol cars were stationed BEHIND the line, partially hidden in dark parking lots. Up front and past the checkpoint to the right, was a very well lighted parking lot...filled with cars and their drivers performing drunk tests.

That scene reminds me of the age-old advice which always provides the best way around such a scenerio. DON'T drink and drive!!

If you MUST drink....either stay home, take a cab or ride next to a designated driver. That way you'll sail through all your checkpoints...without checking into jail or checking OUT for good!

San Jose Safest City

Since the turn of the century, San Jose, California has been recognized as America's safest big city....claiming the top spot from 2001 through 2006. This "safe city" list is based on populations of 500,000 or more, and on crime rates per 1000 people.

Unfortunately, after slipping to 3rd place in 2007, San Jose could only manage a 4th place ranking this past year of 2008, according to FBI crime statistics reports. Never-the-less, city officials are happy about recent crime drops in assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. "We're proud we held steady, and we're still the safest city in California," said Assistant Police Chief Dan Katz. San Jose trailed Honolulu, El Paso,Texas and New York City.

Mayor Chuck Reed stated that maintaining San Jose's crime ranking is a notable achievement, given the poor economy and state funding raids on local governments. "I'm proud that we saw a steady drop in most major crime categories," the Mayor said. Drops in most crimes were attributed to increased focuses on gang-prevention efforts, auto thefts and burglaries. Gang-related crimes were among seven of 10 types that dropped according to the FBI's annual report.

San Jose also reported smaller drops in property crime, aggravated assault, violent crime and homicide. The only increases were mild ones in robbery(5.2 percent), larceny-theft(3.1 percent) and rape)from 217 cases to 220). Despite that awful gang-related shooting in East San Jose on Halloween night which left a 12-year old boy critically wounded, overall gang violence is down 14.5 percent so far this year compared with 2008.

If similar progress is realized in most other crime categories, perhaps San Jose will once again claim the top spot....as our nation's SAFEST big city.

THE BAY BRIDGE S CURVE IS IT SAFE?

The Bay Bridge S curve has had Forty Two accidents on the bridge since it
was put into place. A Hayward man died November 9.2009. When he lost
control of the truck he was driving on the Bay Bridge S-curve. He went
over the side and fell 200 feet. October 14, 2009 a Safeway truck turned
on it’s side and block four lanes for hours. I think the Bay Bridge
S-curve is safe, if drivers would just slow down and stop speeding. It’s
just like any new high construction, you have to obey the laws of the
road, it’s put there for a reason. The other part of the bridge is another
story, the jury is still out. All you drivers pay attention to the road
and your speed and drive safely.

Bay Bridge Accident

How soon before the San Francisco Bay Bridge re-opens? More importantly, will the fix hold for good this time?

High winds Tuesday night caused a steel cross-beam and two tie rods to snap off and fall to the upper deck, damaging three cars and injuring one person. The three steel pieces were part of an emergency repair made just seven weeks ago during a planned Labor Day expansion project.

An un-forseen crack in a structural beam then, forced that repair... and threatened a possible major delay in the bridge's re-opening. However, the crack was repaired, and thus, swiftly allowed the bridge to re-open...nearly on schedule!

After Tuesday's accident, which caused enormous commute problems throughout the entire North and East Bay Area, Caltrans refused to predict when the Bay Bridge would re-open, though the lead contractor predicted the new repair woud be complete sometime today.

Under intense public scrutiny--and now the eyes of the Federal Highway Administration, Caltrans blames high winds and traffic vibration for Tuesday's accident, claiming the repair design was a first-of-its-kind innovation, done on a type of cracked beam never before seen.

"Wind is something that should have been accounted for in that design," Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said Wednesday. "We've identified fatigue as a factor, and our new design should address that."

Still, there are skeptics who believe the initial brace design was an inadequate fix for a 73-year old bridge. UC-Berkeley engineering professor Abolhassan Astaneh-Asi said, "They rushed this repair over Labor Day, and now they refuse to acknowledge that it's an incorrect design."

Caltrans officials defended their brace design, claiming they are making vast improvements this time in order to provide additional protection. Meanwhile, Thursday's commute could set new traffic records as drivers crawl along adjacent highways and bridges, and pack into Bart train stations...all hoping that their sacrifices will lead to a FULLY fixed Bay Bridge--once and for all!

One final question. Who is going to pay for the three smashed autos damaged on the bridge, and the medical bills for the woman who was injured? (Just wondering!)

A Courier Story

I am a ground-courier for a company called Streetwise Special Delivery, which means I drive for a living. That may not sound too exciting, but it is! I get to deliver almost anything you can imagine...to anywhere...and at any time of day or night.

We deliver everything from computer parts to crime lab samples to court documents to chocolate cookies, and our client destinations cover the entire Bay Area, California, and beyond.

The key to our success is delivering whatever is needed ON time, every time, and to the customer's satisfaction... without exception. It's either be consistent, or they'll call another delivery service. There are NO second chances.

If this fails to generate enough excitement, challenge, or variety to my career...there is one final perk that puts the icing on my cake. I get a lot of satisfaction from the appreciative smiles and warm handshakes customers give when a delivery is there early, or their day is saved. I know now that I've helped to make a positive difference somehow!.

I'll share one very special example: We deliver highly controlled medication to critically ill hospice patients dying of cancer or other terminal disease. They are often surviving in the hopeful comfort of thier last days..

A highly specialized hospice care company provides us with pharmacy pick-up information, nurses instructions, and patient addresses where the medicine is delivered to a designated family member or home-care nurse.

This is a unique type of delivery that requires security, safety, and special respect,,,.not just for handling controlled prescription drugs, but, also handling the sensitive mood of the receiving family. It is in this atmosphere, that I enjoyed my most memorable delivery success.

I was called out of bed in San Jose to drive to Walnut Creek to pick up medication bound for a needy patient in Fairfield. I left the house at 12:15am with a deadline of 2:30am. With no traffic and no need to break speed laws, everything fell into place....and I reached the patient's home early, at 1:50am.

As it turned out, the grieving husband ran out of his wife's much needed pain medicine hours earlier, and wasn't expecting me that soon. When he answered the door I couldn't help but see his worried face flash open a relieved smile. Upon signing my release form he began to cry, and then extended me a warm hug of appreciation.

"ThankYou so much and God bless You", he said. I felt shivers down my spine while driving way, bound for home with a little lost sleep, and a lot of self-satisfaction and purpose!!

Road Rage

Road rage is an act of agression by a vehicle driver toward another. If taken to the extreme, it often leads to physical assault, injury, and even death. It has risen to epidemic proportions throughout the country, whereby more drivers fear being victimized by road rage than by drunk drivers.

Between 1000 and 1500 people are killed each year due to road rage incidents, most involving firearms and other weapons...including the assailant's car. In every day, common cases, plain old aggression and aggressive driving also cause over 50-percent of all car crashes in this country.

How do we slow this disease down, especially here in the Bay Area? To start with, we all need to lighten up when driving. I'm going to share an incident that happened to me a few weeks ago that may offer some help::

I take DeLaCruz Blvd every day when working for StreetWise Special Delivery. I was driving South the other morning between Hwy.101 and the San Jose Airport, when I nearly ran a small truck off the road. It happened at a wishbone fork that leads right to Santa Clara or left where it turns into Coleman Ave. I turned left onto Coleman at the same time this small truck turned onto Coleman from the Santa Clara, ElCamino Real side. I was either not paying attention or he drifted into my huge, sunrise blind-spot....because I never saw him!. I changed lanes and cut him right off, not realizing a thing until we stopped a half -mile ahead at the airport entrance stoplight.

This is the perfect road rage scenerio! The driver could either lay on the horn, flip me off, get out of his truck screaming for a fight, or pull out a weapon and physically assault me. It happens all to often, but thankfully...not to me, at least not this day. What did happen was just the opposite, and an example to learn from:

...I heard a tap on the horn from behind me and turned around. The man signaled me to roll down my window. (I thought something may be wrong with my car) He then leaned out of his window, and, in a calm voice intoned..."Did you know you just cut right in front of me?" You almost ran me off the road back there at the bridge." I apologized and said.... "I didn't even see you...is everything OK?" "Yea, I'll live. Just be more careful next time, and have a nice day", he said. I told him thanks and apologized again. We both drove off on our seperate ways, safely and free of road rage!! This truck driver teaches a great lesson! Lighten UP!

...It comes down to the basics.... Don't drive in a bad mood, avoid being in a hurry, and drive defensivly as opposed to aggressively! Always signal when changing lanes.(57% don't) Do not tailgate, do not drive slowly in fast(left) lanes, and above all...AVOID possible confrontations on the road. This means no return screams, obscene gestures, horn honking or high beams. If threatened or taunted by another driver, avoid and evade them.

If pursued, use your cell to call police and/or drive to a station if possible. Do NOT drive home, and do NOT leave your car unless safely away from danger. These rules should help reduce road rage incidents, but it may also come down to common sense.

If you make a mistake behind the wheel and have the chance...apologize appropriatly. Be cheerful and polite to other drivers especially in heavy traffic where most road rage originates. Smile, and let the other driver in, or slow down...and let them pass peacefully.

If we all follow these basic steps, perhaps we can pave more PEACEFUL roads to drive on.

Continue to drive safely out there, and avoid THE RAGE.

Photo Speed Traps

This is a true story, and it happened to a close friend of mine who lives in Los Angeles County. About two years ago he received a photo-radar traffic ticket in the mail, I've never gotten one of those, but I've always dreaded the possibility. We have MANY photo speed traps here in Northern California too!

Anyhow, my friend was shocked to get his first, especially since it was a red light violation that would cost him $425,00! "When and where did I blow a red light?" he thought. Well now, come to think of it he finally remembers a day he was running fast and late for work on a familiar street...that same street listed on the ticket along with the time and date.

"I guess I DID run that light" he reflects..."but I'm going to fight it anyway!" (And, this is how my friend explained how he would beat this ticket in traffic court.)

"The only pictures they take with those photo-radar traps are blurry shots of the license plate and the driver's head through the windshield. How on earth can that prove I ran a red light?" "Besides, there's no cop in court to challenge me, just the judge...who will listen favorably to the great story I have in store".

My friend made it sound so easy. Let's see just how easy it was. Finally, his day in court came. My friend was called in front of the judge, just as expected. There was no citing officer there to argue against him, just as expected. And, he was asked to tell the judge his side of the story, just as expected.

So my friend explained: "Your honor when I approached the intersection the light was yellow, and just about to go red. When I began to stop I noticed the car behind me right on my tail. He WASN'T going to stop! So, rather that being hit from behind...I continued through the light safely, along with the other car."

"That is an interesting explanation young man", said the judge. "Now, let's see what REALLY happened."'

Just then, two court attendants wheeled out a large TV screen. The judge then clicked the remote control he had handy at his desk and cued up my friend's violation. It was a video tape that clearly,crisply and in full motion,,, revealed the entire incident.

What was seen was my friend's car traveling trough the intersection against the red light going about 15 miles over the speed limit. More importantly, there wasn't another vehicle anywhere in sight. His was the only car on screen. THIS was not as expected.

The judge then asked my friend if he cared to ammend his story...which my friend did.(With a red face) He was then ordered to pay the $425.00.

The moral of this story is.... don't waste your time in traffic court fighting a photo generated ticket, unless you can soundly defeat its 'Hollywood Video' evidence!!..

WILDFIRES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA This is the season for wildfires; unfortunately Northern California has two wildfires burning. Santa Cruz Mountains are on fire again, just last year we had the Loma Prieta fire. Another fire burns near the Altamont Pass, threatening I-5 and I-580 East of Livermore. The Lockheed fire caused 2,400 residents to evacuate from the communities of Swanton and Bonny Doon. I hope Cal Fire can get this fire under control for all the evacuees, because loosing your possessions in a fire is devastating. The air quality is poor in the areas where the fires are burning. California is a dry state; it doesn’t get much rainfall so wildfires are common. Strange Things On The Road.

When you drive for a living you see lots of strange things on the road. About a month ago I saw something that you might call a bad joke on Halloween. I was returning late from a job about 1:30am driving North on Highway 580...about 5 miles South of Tracy.

There was no one on the road except me, and, what I was barely able to see putt-putting in the right lane far ahead in the distance. As I quickly gained ground I saw what had to be one of those 40 to 50-year old VW buses, however this one was completely covered in white, sheet like fabric!

When I say completely covered I'm including head lights, tail lights and all the windows...except for part of the windshield and driver-side window. This was literally a slow rolling sheet-mobile covered in everything ghostly white except for four hub-capless tires, and going 40mph down a 70mph highway.My first instinct was to pass this thing and get far, far away...but as I finally caught up I saw something even more freaky.

The driver was heavily dressed in a white,hooded robe that covered every part of him/her...except for a pair of dark shadedglasses, partial nose and mouth. The hood covered the rest, and I though I was looking at the white grim reaper...or something!!!

As I sped ahead glancing back in the rear view mirror I was thinking mass murderer psychoterrorist, prankster, gangster, mobster, monster, radical or just someone really stupid!! As I was about to dial 911 for the California Highway Patrol, I quickly glanced at the rear view mirror and noticed bright red lights pulling something over...way back to the right.

The CHP came through....but who...or what did they stop--and what ever became of this? After a month of waiting for some news, I still haven't heard a peep about my mystery ghost roller in the night. But, I'll keep my eyes and ears open. Drive carefully.

SHOOTING AT A TOLL BRIDGE It was a tragic state of events that happened August 11, 2009 on the Richmond San Rafael Bridge in California. A man pulled onto the bridge shoot a man sitting in his truck on the side by the toll gate and pulled up to toll gate and shoots his girlfriend. I can’t even imagine how the commuters felt seeing a man with a gun shoot two people, let alone the toll takers. I feel for the toll takers, because they are so vulnerable. They have to deal with armed robberies, random shootings and breathing in car fumes all day. If this kind of thing keeps happening, the toll booths should be bullet proof where you have to put your money through a slot. (ACCIDENTS ON MUNI TRAINS AND BUSES) MUNI train and bus accidents in San Francisco Ca. are getting more severe. It seems like San Francisco’s MUNI train operators are getting into accidents that are causing havoc on the streets of San Francisco Ca. There was a hearing August 10, 2009 where people voiced the concern about the MUNI train and Bus system. A day after the hearings a MUNI bus hit a woman at Ninth and Market street and shut down Market between 8th and 9th street. The people are scared that this problem is getting out of control and they fear for there safety. People want answers on how MUNI intends to fix the problem. One man at the hearing said he was hit by a MUNI train driving his SUV. It was a good thing that he was in a big SUV, because if he were in a smaller car it would have been deadly. MUNI finely filled the position of Chief Safety Operator this might cut down on the accidents or put a better safety system in place. The Chief Safety Operator better make stricter guide lines for the drivers. Rattlesnake

On a scorching hot day last week I was driving on a narrow road just West of Santa Theresa Golf Course, when, suddenly I slowed down to get a better look at what was

slithering off the right shoulder of the road. It was a rattlesnake about 5 feet long with a thick, rattle-like tail. I quickly pulled over and stopped about 40 feet short of where this reptile was making its get-away towards an open ditch.

As I hopped out of the car I had just enough time to see the snake dissappear into the dry bushes and trees just off the road, which jutted down into a steep ravine...and apparently to the safety of the arid foothills.

This wasn't the first rattlesnake I've seen in this area over the past several years. The last one was run-over and killed in the middle of a similiar road...which inspires a few other interesting recollections: The first is a joke you may have heard... (What's the difference between a dead rattlesnake in the middle of the road...and a dead lawyer?? Answer: There are skid marks in front of the rattlesnake!!) .

These next observations aren't so funny: California is a hot bed for a number of species of rattlesnakes, all very poisenous. Being bitten leads to serious injury and often...death. So, be extra careful when walking in hilly, rocky, dry areas especially the open countryside.

Awareness and avoidance are keys to rattlesnake safety. Don't bother them and they won't bother you. The danger is stumbling upon them suddenly, causing them to coil and strike at lightning speed with a venomous bite meant to protect them, and...possibly kill you. So, STAY AWAY...especially in the late Summer months of August and September when rattlesnakes often shed their skin and often go temporarily blind, making them even more dangerous.

Years ago I played lots of golf... often at Santa Theresa, and often in the late Summer. Hearing the hisses and rattles from the hillsides off the fairways, kept me from even thinking of trying to find an errant shot. Better to suffer two penalty strokes, than to take one from a rattlesnake. I also saw a few shedded snake skins over the years, one measuring seven feet long! It reminded me of one Santa Theresa Golf "Urban Legend"!!

The story goes a golfer was searching for his ball behind the green at the end of the 11th hole, where the area behind the green sinks down into dense, dry ravine of trees and bushes. Allegedly, the poor soul stumbled onto a nest of baby rattlesnakes and their mother....suffering multiple bites. It was the last hole the golfer ever played.

While I can't be sure this story happened, I'll close with one final lesson a guy learned while stumbling on a rattlesnake crossing the road....just like I mentioned at the beginning.

Only, he stopped and picked up the snake... a large diamond-back rattler, which then laid a huge bite on his hand. This man made it to a hospital in the nick of time, only to barely escape with his life. He also nearly lost what was left of his hand. The large dose of bite-. venom ate away most of its tissue. The next 6-months were the most painful and regrettable for this man or anyone else to possibly imagine.

I watched this on the "Animal Planet" cable channel. Rattlesnakes have their rightful place out in the open country, but if you come upon one trying to cross the road, stay away...and let it cross!!
